Once upon a time there was a little boy who became very ill. He had to spend all day in bed unable to move. Because other children weren't allowed to come near him he suffered greatly and spent his days feeling sad and blue

There wasn't much he could do except look out of the window. Time passed, and his feeling of despair just grew. Until one day he saw a strange shape in the window. It was a penguin eating a sausage sandwich. The penguin squeezed in through the open window said "good afternoon to the boy turned around and left again

Of course the boy was very surprised. He was still trying to work out what had happened, when outside his window he saw a monkey in a nappy busy blowing up a balloon. At first the boy asked himself what that could possibly be but after a while as more and more crazy-looking characters appeared out the window he burst out laughing and found it hard to stop.

Anyone wanting to stop laughing would never be helped by seeing a pig playing a tambourine an elephant jumping on a trampoline or a dog wearing a pair of glasses and talking about nothing except politics. The little boy didn't tell anyone about this because who would have believed him Even so those strange characters ended up putting joy back in his heart and in his body. Before long, his health had improved so much that he was able to go back to school again.

There he got to talk to his friends and tell them all the strange things he had seen. While he was talking to his best friend he saw something sticking out of his friend's school bag. The boy asked his friend what it was and he was so insistent that finally his friend had to show him what was in the bag.
There inside were all the fancy-dress suits and disguises that his best friend had been using to try to cheer the little boy up

And from that day on the little boy always did his best to make sure that no one felt sad and alone.

पुस्तक-समीक्षा : गोदान

लेखक : मुंशी प्रेमचंद का मूल नाम धनपतराय था। उनका जनम ३१ जुलाई, १८८0 में बनारस के लमही गाँव में हुआ। उनकी साहित्य-रचना में कुल ३२० कहानियाँ और १४ उपन्यास शुमार हैं। प्रेमचंद युग-प्रवर्तक लेखक थे। उपन्यास -सम्राट की उपाधि से सम्मानित प्रेमचंद के लेखन में शहरी, कस्बाई और ठेठ देहाती जीवन के सजीव चित्र मिलते हैं। प्रेमचंद ने हिंदी साहित्य जगत को मंत्र, पूस की रात, कफ़न, ठाकुर का कुआँ, पंच -परमेश्वर, शतरंज के खिलाड़ी सरीखी कालजयी कहानियाँ दी हैं। प्रेमचंद का संपूर्ण जीवन निर्धनता और कष्टों में ही बीता।( जो देश और काल ने ऐसे महान साहित्यकारों कीइस दयनीय दशा का साक्षी रहा हो, उसके दुर्भाग्य का अंदाजा लगाना कोई कठिन कार्य नहीं। ) मात्र 56 वर्ष की आयु में ड्राप्सी रोग से पीड़ित होकर ८ अक्टूबर, १९३६ में इस महान लेखक का देहावसान हो गया।

गोदान : यूँ तो मुंशी प्रेमचंद की प्रत्येक रचना जन-जीवन का आईना है, परन्तु ‘गोदान’ हिंदी साहित्य की एक अमूल्य निधि है। संसार की शायद ही कोई ऐसी भाषा होगी जिसमे इस विश्वविख्यात उपन्यास का अनुवाद न हुआ हो। वर्षों पुराना होने के बावजूद इस उपन्यास की मौजूदा समय में भीअद्भुत प्रासंगिकता है। गोदान को पढ़ते समय आपको ऐसा लगेगा मानो यह आपकी ही, आपके आसपास की ही कहानी हो।

यह कहानी होरी और धनिया नामक एक कृषि दम्पति के जीवन के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती हैं। किसी भी ग्रामीण की भाँति होरी की भी हार्दिक अभिलाषा है कि उसके पास भी एक पालतू गाय हो जिसकी वह सेवा करे। इसकी दिशा में किये गए होरी के प्रयासों से आरम्भ होकर यह कहानी कई सामजिक कुरीतियों पर कुठाराघात करती हुई आगे बढ़ती है। गोदान ज़मींदारों और स्थानीय साहूकारों के हाथों गरीब किसानो का शोषण और उनके अत्याचार की सजीव व्याख्या है। भारतीय जन-जीवन का खूबसूरत चित्रण, समाज के विभिन्न वर्गों की समस्याओं के प्रति लेखक का प्रगतिशील द्रष्टिकोण एवं किसानों की दयनीय अवस्था का ऐसा मार्मिक वर्णन पढ़ना ही अपने आप में एक अनूठा अनुभव है । इसी के साथ ही शहरीकरण और नवीन शिक्षित वर्ग की एक कथा इस ग्रामीण कथा के साथ चलती है। कहानी के शहरी युवा नायकों के मनोभाव और अपने उत्तरदायित्वों के प्रति कर्तव्यबोध होने तक की उनकी यात्रा दर्शायी गयी है। कहानी का अंत दुखद है और पाठकों के ज़ेहन में कई सवाल छोड़ जाता है।

गोदान को जहाँ ना सिर्फ एक उम्दा एवं संवेदनशील कहानी पढ़ने के शौक से पढ़ा जा सकता है वहीँ दूसरी ओर इसमें विकसित की गयी विचारधाराएं, नीतियाँ एवं आदर्श भी स्वतः ही मन पर गहरी छाप छोड़ने में सक्षम है । हो सकता है कि प्रेमचंद के कई विचारों से आप सहमत न भी हो पर उस समय में लिखा गया यह उपन्यास पढ़कर आप निराश नहीं होंगे।

THE IMPORTANCE OF A LIBRARY.

A library can be considered a store – house of knowledge. In dictionaries the word “library” has been defined as “a building or room containing a collection of books”. A library renders a great service to the society. There are a large number of Public Libraries maintained by the local authorities throughout the island.

A library plays a very important role in promoting the progress of knowledge. There are many people who love reading. But they can’t afford to buy books because the prices of books are very high. So when one becomes a member of a library, he can borrow valuable books. A member can borrow two books at a time and he can keep it with him for two weeks. Libraries are particularly useful for poor children. Even those who are better off can’t afford to buy all the books they require for their studies. For instance, invaluable books like Encyclopedias and large dictionaries cannot be purchased.
